7 Secret GMO Foods
Of all the genetically modified foods out there, it seems like corn, soy, and canola get all the attention...
And for good reason, these agricultural staples make up the backbone of America's billion dollar processed food industry.
The sheer volume of these GM organisms hitting our store shelves and entering the guts of our favorite animals everyday should be enough to keep even the biggest junk food addict away from the cereal and potato chip aisles.
But as a NHF reader, I'm sure you know the dangers of cooking your food with canola oil or digging into a bowl of corn flakes.
While avoiding junk food is certainly commendable, that doesn't mean you've been avoiding GMOs by sticking to the produce and meat aisles.
The fact is, where there's a demand for a food, there will always be Big Agriculture looking to make an extra buck.
Even if all of America gave up junk food and ate only whole foods, Big Ag would be there to make sure they dominated the market.
And their tool of choice is the Genetically Modified Organism.
While corn, soy, wheat, and canola may be their crops of choice, that doesn't mean they've stopped there.
Below are seven foods that are either directly or indirectly tainted by the GMO scourge.
1) Salmon — Salmon is one of those foods where finding the good stuff is becoming harder and harder.
First of all, most Atlantic salmon are farm raised.
While this might not sound too bad, consider that, like lots of farmed animals these days, salmon are fed unnatural diets of corn and other grains, and kept in confined areas that increase their risk of disease.
And that natural pink hue they're known for?
That comes from cartenoids, a type of antioxidant that the fish get from eating lots of shrimp and krill in the open ocean.
However, a lot of the salmon you see at the grocery store is actually dyed pink, as their corn diets do not provide any cartenoids.
The natural krill and shrimp diet also provides salmon with their well-known high omega-3 fatty acid content, something which drops drastically when the salmon are fed corn.
The fact is, salmon weren't meant to eat corn, yet because it's so cheap and calorically dense, salmon farmers have been struggling to find a way to feed salmon corn without all the health problems that accompany it.
Enter AquAdvantage salmon, a genetically modified salmon that grows twice as fast as normal salmon and is able to tolerate corn more easily.
While this GMO salmon has yet to be approved by the FDA, we both know with Big Ag's money and lobbyists, it's only a matter of time before we see it in the seafood sections of our grocery stores.
In the meantime, just buy wild caught seafood.
2) Alfalfa — This is an interesting story.
So, GMO giant Monsanto has patented a GMO alfalfa seed that is resistant to one of its most popular (and very toxic) weed killers.
Most of us associate alfalfa with the sprouts, which are simply the young shoots that first come from the seed.
While you think Monsanto would want to push their GMO alfalfa into the sprouts market, they've actually banned farmers from using the seed for alfalfa sprouts.
The reason has not yet been disclosed1.
So if we're not eating this GMO product, why should we worry?
Well, environmental concerns aside, you might be indirectly consuming these GMO alfalfa through your favorite meats, eggs, or dairy products.
Alfalfa happens to be a popular feed for cows, sheep, chickens, and goats.
You are what you eat, which means this GMO alfalfa could find its way into your own body.
3) & 4) Zucchini and Yellow Squash — I've included these two together because they are closely related and are genetically modified for the same reason.
Both these members of the squash family are susceptible to viruses and fungi spread by crop-eating insects that can wipe out entire fields of these crops.
The GMO versions of these foods are virus and fungus protected.
Of course, many of these diseases can be avoided by practicing traditional farming techniques like crop rotation, maintaining a healthy population of carnivorous insects like lady bugs, and keeping the plants spaced far apart enough that the diseases cannot spread easily.
But in a day and age when Big Ag encourages farmers to push every inch of soil beyond capacity and awards overproduction, these traditional farming practices are thrown away and replaced with unsustainable practices like using GMO seeds, depleting soil of all nutrients, and using toxic but efficient chemicals to keep weeds and bugs away.
5) Papaya — Same situation as the zucchini and yellow squash: After a devastating virus almost wiped out the papaya plant in Hawaii in the '90s, a GMO variety was developed to resist the disease.
It was so successful on the island that about 80% of the papaya now grown in Hawaii is genetically modified.
Unfortunately, Hawaii is not alone in its adoption of the GMO papaya.
While it remains one of the smaller producers in the world, papaya exporting giants like Mexico, Brazil, and Belize are slowly adopting the new Franken-papaya, even when they're little affected by the virus that almost wiped out the Hawaiian crop.
6) Tomatoes — If you've ever grown tomatoes before, you know it's a challenge to pick them and eat them before they start to get soft spots or mold.
They just happen to be one of those fruits that are prone to rotting quickly.
But instead of encouraging people to find creative ways to cook with them or preserving them using traditional methods like canning, Big Ag decided they'd rather bastardize the tomato using genetic manipulation.
Tomatoes were one of the first crops to be genetically modified precisely because they tended to rot so quickly.
Ever eat a tomato out of season?
It's probably a GMO.
Ever eat a tomato that retained it's plumpness and light color for days on end?
It's probably a GMO.
Ever eat Heinz ketchup?
You've probably consumed GMO tomatoes.
7) Honey — I know this one will sound alarming.
"How in the hell did Big Ag manage to get their hands on honey?!" you might ask.
Technically, they haven't... yet.
While a genetically engineered bee doesn't sound too far off these days, the fact is they have yet to change the environment's most important pollinator.
What Big Ag has done is create genetically modified plants, and all plants, no matter where they come from, require pollination.
Bees don't discriminate where they get the pollen to make their honey, whether it be the organically grown apple tree flower or the genetically modified rapeseed (the plant from which canola oil is derived) flower, pollen is pollen to these bees.
So when they do get their pollen from the rows upon rows of genetically modified soy bean flowers, it goes straight into their honey, and if you're unlucky enough to buy honey from a hive that is near a GMO crop field, you too will be consuming some GMO pollen.
If any of these foods were on your grocery list, don't get too frustrated.
While non-GMO foods may be harder to find, that doesn't mean they don't exist.
It will just take a little more research on your part to figure out which foods to feed on and which to fret over.
You can minimize your risk of getting GMO food by buying organic, buying when fruits and veggies are in season, and looking for "GMO Free" certifications on your food's packaging.
