Remedy: Calendula

Why it works:

Calendula has long been used as a folk remedy for a host of skin conditions, particularly those that involve inflammation.

While calendula probably can't prevent this particular skin ailment, it can help outbreaks heal.

How to use it:

Look for skin lotions that contain calendula.

You can also steep calendula flowers in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, then apply the flowers directly to the skin.

Remedy: Evening primrose oil

Why it works:

Evening primrose oil is extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose plant.

These seeds contain gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid that is heralded for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Many health care practitioners believe that an EFA deficiency is one of the main causes of this skin ailment.

How to use it:

You can buy evening primrose oil by itself, though it is often blended with other sources of essential fatty acids such as borage oil and flaxseed oil.

The best source of the oil will be cold expeller pressed, as heat can damage the oil, and it will need to be refrigerated to keep it from going rancid.

Mix one to two tablespoons of the oil with unsweetened fruit juice or plain yogurt, and take every day.

What to watch out for:

Studies of the effects of GLAs and evening primrose oil on sufferers have been mixed, and some health care providers are skeptical that there is any measurable benefit.
