Eczema ~ Ailments & Remedies

Remedy: Calendula

Why it works:

This particular herb has long been used as a folk remedy for a host of skin conditions, particularly those that involve inflammation.

While calendula probably can't prevent this particular skin ailment, it can help outbreaks heal.

How to use it:

Look for skin lotions that contain Calendula.

You can also steep Calendula flowers in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, then apply the flowers directly to the skin.

Other remedies to consider:

Remedy: Evening primrose oil

Why it works:

Evening primrose oil is extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose plant.

These seeds contain gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid that is heralded for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Many health care practitioners believe that an EFA deficiency is one of the main causes of eczema.

How to use it:

You can buy evening primrose oil by itself, though it is often blended with other sources of essential fatty acids such as borage oil and flaxseed oil.

The best source of the oil will be cold expeller pressed, as heat can damage the oil, and it will need to be refrigerated to keep it from going rancid.

Mix one to two Tbs. of the oil with unsweetened fruit juice or plain yogurt, and take every day.

In addition to the approaches mentioned above, you may want to consider the following natural treatments for eczema:

Allergy is ultimately an inflammatory condition and diet can profoundly influence inflammation throughout the body.

Follow an anti-inflammatory diet and avoid pro-inflammatory ingredients.

Skin disorders are often strongly linked to psychological stress; conversely, stress-relieving techniques can often be very effective in providing relief.

Try aloe vera gel, calendula lotion or cream, and chaparral lotion on irritated skin.

Take gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

This unusual fatty acid is found in evening primrose oil, black currant oil and borage oil but is very hard to come by in the diet.

GLA appears to have nourishing effects on skin, hair, and nails.

Take 500 mg. twice a day and expect to wait six to eight weeks to see results.

Eliminate milk and all milk products, which may irritate the immune system.

In addition, therapies in both homeopathy and traditional Chinese medicine have proven effective for many skin conditions and could be worth exploring.

What to watch out for:

Studies of the effects of GLAs and evening primrose oil on sufferers have been mixed, and some health care providers are skeptical that there is any measurable benefit.
