Cold-Sores ~ Natures Super Foods

Concern: Cold-Sores
Remedy: Black and green tea
Why it works:
Cold -sores are caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus.
Black tea and
green tea
both consist of leaves from the same plant, green tea is simply harvested earlier than black tea.
Tea leaves contain quercetin and catechins, substances that are believed to have antiviral properties.
Although science believes you can never truly rid your body of the virus, drinking black and
green tea
can help your body recuperate more quickly from an outbreak.
How to use it:
Steep black or green tea bags or leaves for up to 10 minutes in hot water (because green tea is more delicate, it should be brewed with water that is not quite boiling).
Sip several cups throughout the day, but have your last cup before 4pm.
Tea does contain caffeine, and your body needs rest to help fight off the virus.
Other remedies to consider:
Remedy: Lysine
Why it works:
Studies have shown that cold-sores thrive on the amino acid arginine (found in chocolate and nuts, so avoid these foods if you are prone to breakouts).
Lysine, another amino acid, competes directly with arginine, so the theory goes that giving your body more lysine will help diminish the power of arginine.
How to use it:
Foods that are high in lysine include red meat, poultry, fish, dairy and beans.
When you suspect an outbreak, you can also take lysine supplements.
Taking 1,000 milligrams three times a day during a breakout has been shown to be effective.
Remedy: Iron
Why it works:
Some studies have suggested a link between
iron
deficiency and more frequent outbreaks of cold- sores.
How to use it:
Keep your body strong and ward off future outbreaks by adding more iron-rich foods to your diet.
Good sources include many cereals (particularly Total), lentils, soybeans, liver, cashews and kidney beans.
Recommended daily allowance of iron is 18 milligrams.
Remedy: Tea tree oil
Why it works:
A relative of eucalyptus, tea tree oil is a multitasking remedy.
It has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties.
How to use it:
Clean and dry the affected area.
Then apply a few drops of oil directly to the cold-sore to help speed healing.
