Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, Calif., have weighed in on four popular diets in the longest and largest comparison study done to date.

Atkins, Zone, LEARN, and Ornish diets were randomly assigned to 311 non-diabetic, pre-menopausal, overweight women for 12 months.

The low-carb, high-fat Atkins diet gets high marks in one of the biggest, longest head-to-head studies of popular weight-loss plans, beating the Zone, the Ornish diet and even U.S. guidelines.

Atkins, a diet very low in carbohydrates, favored best, with participants losing an average of 10.4 pounds over 12 months.

The next best results came from LEARN, (Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitudes, Relationships and Nutrition), which is low in fat, high in carbohydrates, with the average weight loss being 5.7 pounds.

At 4.8 average pounds lost, the Ornish diet came in third for participants who ate a diet high in carbohydrates.

The diet that fared the worst was the Zone diet, a diet low in carbohydrates, with an average 12-month loss of 3.5 pounds.

The Atkins-diet has had a host of skeptics in recent years, but nothing in the study indicated Atkins was worse for participants than any other group.

Speculating a reason for the success of the diet could lie in the simplicity of the message.

It's just all about cutting back on the carbs.

The National Institutes of Health and a grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan supported the study.
