Concern: Asthma

Remedy: Red apples and red wine

Why it works:

Studies have shown that people who eat more apples are less likely to have attacks than people who eat fewer apples.

They have also associated drinking red wine with reduced severity and frequency of attacks in sufferers.

Both of these substances are high in flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants.

How to use it:

It's just like the old adage says: an apple a day.

And based on the findings of the study, one to two glasses of red wine per day.

Other remedies to consider:

Remedy:

Kava kava (Piper methyscticum)

Why it works:

Kava grows naturally on islands in the South Pacific.

There, it has traditionally been brewed into a beverage and served to promote a sense of calm and well-being.

It is a natural tranquilizer with none of the foggy side effects of other prescription calming agents.

If your attacks are caused by stress, kava can help manage your anxiety.

How to use it:

In tincture form, take a few drops under the tongue.

Kava acts quickly, in as little as 30 minutes.

What to watch out for:

There have been numerous reports of liver failure in people who take kava kava in Europe.

Do not use for extended periods of time (more than one month) or at all if you have liver problems, regularly consume alcohol or are on any medication that also compromises liver function.

Remedy: Vitamin-C

Why it works:

Many people with asthma have been shown to also have a vitamin-C deficiency.

Vitamin-C has natural antihistamine properties, which can prevent inflammation of the airways.

Studies have also shown that vitamin-C can help prevent attacks when taken right before exercising.

How to use it:

Good food sources of vitamin-C are guava, bell peppers, strawberries, kiwi, kale, cabbage and oranges.

Since the body simply sheds whatever vitamin-C it doesn't need, it's difficult to get too much.

If your asthma attacks are frequent, daily doses of up to 2,000 milligrams may be helpful.

What to watch out for:

High doses of vitamin-C may affect your stool.

If your bowel movements become loose or watery, back off your dosage.
