We've all seen the ads and it sounds too good to be true
My goodness all we have to do is take a pill, and we'll suddenly find ourselves muscle-bound and full of youthful vim and vigor.
Hold on though.
Because what those ads aren't saying to you is that you'll also empty out your wallet and possibly harm your body using unproven anti-aging-therapies.
We need to realize that the aging process isn't fully understood yet and scientists have not found a "magic bullet" that can reverse the effects of aging.
To help sort out the science from the hype, we need to find out what evidence, if any, there is backing these
anti-aging-therapies.
Antioxidants
Let's undertsand that as we process food for energy, our body produces substances called free radicals.
Free radicals are believed by many scientisits to contribute to aging as well as various diseases and ailments.
For us to neutralize these free radicals, our body uses antioxidants, which are particular vitamins, minerals and enzymes that come from the food we eat.
Proponents believe that antioxidants can prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, to name a few.
Some antioxidants you may have heard of include:
Vitamin-A
Vitamin B-6
Vitamin B-12
Vitamin-C
Vitamin-E
Beta carotene
Folic acid
Selenium
To us, there is no question, the best way to give your body the antioxidants it needs is to eat a variety of
fresh fruits
and vegetables, ideally, natures "super foods".
If we, for whatever reason, can't obtain all the nutrients we need from food, our doctor may recommend using supplements to make up for any deficiencies.
Also, if you have certain medical conditions, such as macular degeneration, your doctor may recommend that you supplement your diet with antioxidants.
