Resveratrol

Super Foods Guide

Resveratrol is the compound responsible for what is commonly referred to as the “French Paradox.

This paradox has been noted on many news and documentary programs and has increased the sales of red wine and grape juice.

It involves the strange relationship between the amount of wine commonly consumed in French culture and the evidence of a lowered risk of heart disease among the French.

This compound is commonly found in red grapes and wine, as well as pine trees and, believe it or not, peanuts.

It's been used in Asian cultures for centuries for the purposes of treating heart problems, as well as disorders of the liver.

The many benefits include antioxidant properties, which means it is capable of ridding the body of dangerous and harmful free radicals that might eventually lead to the development of cancer.

It's also thought to be capable of actually killing cancer cells that have already developed.

Additionally, it,s beneficial in protecting the central nervous system, regulating hormones and acting as a blood thinning agent.

Further benefits of this substance include reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, especially when combined withVitamin-E and Vitamin-C.

Early studies indicate that resveratrol may also have uses in therapeutic treatment of post stroke care, as well as injury and trauma related to the spine and central nervous system.

Recent studies also indicate this compound may even play a critical role in expanding the length of life spans.

While you've heard about resveratrol’s heart benefits, scientists also have found that it slows age-related deterioration and functional decline.

The powerful plant extract is also vital antioxidant forour brains.

It was found to essentially boost brain power on demand.

Like pushing the gas pedal to speed up when we need to pass, this super extract amps up blood flow in the brain while performing tough mental tasks to meet the increased demand for “power.”

So when you’re challenged as a business person, a student or youjust want improved mental speed and agility, this plant extract is a go-to brain ally.

Yet another study shows, long-term supplementation with this super extract, maintains the health of blood vessels in your brain and preserves cognitive function.

Resveratrol increases the amount of oxygen in the brain, which in turn increases memory capacity and improved cognition.

Resveratrol & Cancer

In a 2008 study on cell cultures, this super substance helped suppress breast-cancer progression in its earliest stages.

The antioxidant appeared to stop estrogen from reacting with DNA molecules and forming compounds that mark the start of cancer cell formation.

It's believed that it may be crucial in preventing other kinds of cancer and reducing the risk of cancers spreading into bones.

Since this compound works as a blood thinning agent, individuals who are already taking anti-coagulants, should be very cautious about introducing supplemental forms of this nutrient into their daily regimen, without first speaking with their physician.

While it's always best to obtain nutrients and vitamins from natural food sources, when there are severe deficiencies, or it's not possible to obtain vitamins from dietary means, supplements can be a great way to introduce these much needed nutrients into the body.

Resveratrol and Age-Related Disorders

In a 2009 review of recent studies on red wine's health effects, researchers determined that in addition to helping protect against heart disease and cancer, this amazing compound may aid in the prevention of age-related disorders like inflammation and neuro-degenerative disease.

The review also indicated that it may also help reduce risk of diabetes.

Resveratrol has been shown to be a very powerful substance.

In a U.S., study it's been shown to extend the life span of yeast cells by up to 80 per cent.

However, studies have not been done on humans yet.

They would need to conduct tests on humans using this compound to see if these types of similar benefits apply.

So should you start sipping a glass of red wine with dinner?

If it’s something you enjoy, feel free to have a glass of Merlot or Shiraz with your meal.

But if you want to reap all the benefits this super compound has to offer, it’s best to take it in supplemental form.

What’s the difference?

One ounce of red wine averages around 90 mcg. of resveratrol.

Taking a supplement provides 20 mg. or more of the polyphenol in each capsule.

This is at least 220 times the amount of resveratrol found in one fluid ounce of red wine.

Just make sure to use a standardized supplement to ensure potency.

Resveratrol & Heart Health

This super compound may help guard against age-related decline in heart health, according to a 2008 study on middle-aged mice.

Researchers examined more than 1,000 genes in the heart, all of which change in function as we age.

But in mice that were fed low doses, that age-related change was thwarted by 92%.

Given these findings, the study's authors suggest that regular intake may serve as "a robust intervention in the retardation of cardiac aging."

Of course, it's important to remember that research done on animals does not confirm equal efficacy in humans.

Thoughts On Choosing A Resveratrol Supplement

1. Purchase your supplements from pharmaceutical GMP compliant manufacturers.

This is especially important for consumers because supplements are now largely unregulated in the U.S. and the U.K., meaning customers of health supplements only have a 1 in 5 chance of buying a supplement that actually contains the ingredients stated on the label.

What's more concerning is the fact many of these supplements have been found to contain harmful contaminants, fillers and binders.

And we thought health supplements were designed to maintain and promote health.

Unfortunately, they can actually impair your health.

2. Before you buy any kind, be sure your supplement does not contain any fillers or additives (examples include: sugar, starch, gluten, silica or any artificial colors or flavors.

Although most drug and health food stores sell resveratrol in capsule form, few studies have explored the healthbenefits of taking these supplements.

For now, we suggest increasing your intake by eating grapes, blueberries, cranberries, and pomegranate, all of which are rich in a range of antioxidants.

Precautions

There is no RDA (recommended daily allowance) set for this compound.

A sensible dose of around 30 to 50 mgs is said to be an optimal dosage by some experts.

So, whether you’re looking to improve your survival odds or simply avoid chronic disease, chances are, resveratrol can help.
